Born Free

words by Don Black, music by John Barry (of James Bond fame)

Original Air Dates: September - December 1974 (NBC)

Location: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

The real Elsa the lion and friends

Oscar-winning title song from the 1966 film, John Barry also won for the soundtrack.  It charted at  # 7 by Roger Williams in 1966, and #38 by the Hesitations in 1968.

The first time this song charted, it was, of course, the theme to the movie, which was released in 1966. The music was written by John Barry, a well known composer who probably is most famous for his numerous James Bond movie music credits. The second time this song charted, was a full two years after the movie and the original hit by Roger Williams. The Hesitations were a soul group from Cleveland. The lead singer, George "King" Scott was accidentally killed by a bullet from a gun owned by tenor Fred Deal at the same time their version of the song was charting.
