The Littlest Hobo was originally created by Dorrell McGowan for a 1958 movie shot in black-and-white in California by director Charles Rondeau. The movie led to a TV series in 1963, also in black and white. It was filmed in the Vancouver area of British Columbia and was shown in both Canada and the U.S. In 1979, the show was put into production once again. It was also filmed in Canada, this time in color, and saw only limited broadcast in the U.S.

The star of the show was an extremely intelligent, wandering German shepherd who walked into a new place at the beginning of each episode. He (or she) would come upon people down on their luck or in trouble, and always befriended and helped the struggling person. Then, when the job was done, the shepherd departed to continue the cross-country drifting.

It is unclear as to the name of the dog. Obviously, since it never had an owner, no one it met would know its name. Fans knew it as "Hobo" and also as "London" which was the name in the credits of the dog actor (and there were several dogs used in the part, just like Lassie). Also, I doubt if the gender of the dog was ever established.

A special thank you goes to Nancy L. for help with this show. I was only aware of the color version. She remembered the older one and led me to the info I needed.

Also, I received some nice additional information from Terry Bush, the writer and performer of the 1979 theme. Here are Terry's own words: I was mainly a jingle writer, so most of my 'stuff' was used on commercials. The Littlest Hobo theme song was the only one used for an actual TV series that was played worldwide. I released the song (finally, after 20 years) because of a resurgence of interest in the UK because they used the theme for a commercial a while back. The commercial was extremely popular due to the theme, that another band over there recorded it. I thought it was about time to release my original version! Your site is very informative and helpful. Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Terry

1963 LYRICS

I find adventure everywhere,
And friends with whom I'd like to share.

This is my stop along the way.
Don't really know how long I'll stay.

Stop over. The world is my friend.
Stop over along the road without end.

Traveling around from town to town.
Sometimes I think I'll settle down.

But I know I'd hunger to be free.
Rovin' is the only life for me.

A-driftin'. The world is my friend.
I'm travelin' along the road without end.

ORIGINAL MOVIE LYRICS

Looks like we're comin' into town.
Seems like this train is slowin' down.

Can't help but wonder what's in store.
Could be I've been here once before.

A-driftin'. The world is my friend.
I'm travlin' along the road without end.

Ridin' these rails town to town.
Sometimes I think I'll settle down.

But I know I'd hunger to be free.
Rovin's the only life for me.

A-driftin'. The world is my friend.
I'm travlin' along the road without end.

1979 LYRICS

There's a voice that keeps on calling me
Down the road is where I'll always be

Every stop I make, I'll make a new friend
Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll want settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Down this road, that never seems to end,
Where new adventure, lies just around the bend.

So if you want to join me for a while
Just grab your hat, come travel light - that's hobo style.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll want settle down,
Until tomorrow, the whole world is my home.

So if you want to join me for a while
Just grab your hat, come travel light
That's hobo style.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll want settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Instrumental Bridge

Maybe tomorrow, I'll want settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

There's a world, that's waiting to unfold,
A brand new tale, no one has ever told,

We've journey'd far but, you know it won't be long,
We're almost there and we've paid our fare, with the hobo song.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll want settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

So if you want to join me for a while
Just grab your hat, come travel light - that's hobo style.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll find what I call home
Until tomorrow, you know I'm free to roam.
