Sagwa

Original Air Dates: 2000 - present (PBS)

Location: Southern Coast of China

The lyrics to this animated series, created by the author Amy Tan, are both in Chinese and English. The English line is: Sagwa You're my best friend.

The Chinese, I've been told, has the same meaning.

Paul V. wrote me the following:

The lyrics are in Mandarin. I can only make out some of them.

Hao PengYo, Hao PengYo  Sagwa Hsi-huan . . . (This is where I cannot hear it clearly, or else I could translate it).
Hao = Good   PengYo = friend    Hsi-huan = like (as in, I 'like' music)
It is also possible that the words in the third line are "Sagwa Shi - (something) meaning, "Sagwa is"
Literally: Good Friend, Good Friend, Sagwa
In this case, good friend would translate roughly as "Best friend." So the follow-up verse in English, "Sagwa, you're my best friend"  is probably the essential meaning of the Chinese lyrics. In other words, it's a bi-lingual song.

Daisy suggested the following:

good friends, good friends, Sagwa and I are good friends [repeat 2x]

Sagwa your my best friend. Sagwa . . . [repeat whole song 2x]

Hao peng yo, Hao peng yo, Sa Kua she wa te hao peng yo, sa kua [whole song 2x]

Pamela S. suggested this:

Hao pungyo, hao pungyou [Good friend, good friend]

Sagwa shi wo de hao pungyou [Sagwa is my good friend]

Sagwa you're my best friend.  Sagwa . . .  (repeated twice)

The Chinese spellings are pinyin.
