Central Florida 1835

This map shows Florida as it was around the year 1835, 10 years before it became a state. Mosquito County was created in 1824 out of St. Johns County (while it is not surprising that a county in Central Florida could be called Mosquito, one wonders why it was called Mosquito).

The map shows the Army fort system developed over the years because of the ongoing conflict with the Seminole Indians. Ft. Gatlin, the true beginning of the City of Orlando is shown, as is Ft. Maitland, Ft. Christmas, Ft. Mellon and the settlement of Enterprise which was the early seat of Mosquito County. The map also provides us with one of the earliest accurate representations of the major lakes and rivers in Central Florida (including Lake Anapopka (Apopka)).
