Central Florida 1845

This map shows Florida at the time of statehood. Like in previous maps, the central part of the new state is nearly empty of regular settlements. Orlando would be just to the left of the 's' in 'Mosquito.'

The western part of the map shows that it was considered an Indian Reserve. In reality it was more a loose assortment of Indian communities that the U.S. were allowing to exist at this time. Unfortunately, for the Indians, white settlers were already moving into the area and it would not be too much longer before the Army and the Florida Militia would be called upon to round up the Indians or at least push them father south into the Big Cypress Swamp and the Everglades.
