Central Florida 1845

This map shows Florida as it was in the years immediately after it achieved statehood in 1845. Orange County is shown extending to the east coast encompassing the areas of today's Orange, Volusia, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. It also shows Mellonville, the new settlement on the south side of Lake Monroe, but it does not show any settlement on the Orlando Area. The was the time of Orlando's change from a small settlement around Ft. Gatlin to the town of Jernigan. Ft. Gatlin was officially abandoned by the Army in 1849, so this map is possibly from around 1849, but not later than that because it does not show Putnam County, which was created in 1849 from the western part of St. Johns County. The map continues to show Lake Apopka as Lake Anapopka.
