FLORIDA 1862

This map shows Florida in the beginning of the Civil War. It illustrates just how undeveloped penninsular Florida was at the time of the war. Tampa and Key West were the only towns of any size. And many of the settlements continue to be known by their Seminole War vintage forts. The majority of these forts had been abandoned by the military 20 years prior to the Civil War and were not used by the Confederacy as military posts.

Most of the action concerning Florida during the Civil War was connected to its coastline and harbors. The Union Navy did its best to blockade shipping around the state.
