Central Florida 1866

This close-up of the state map below shows Central Florida as it appeared around the year 1866. The map was created just after the end of the Civil War and shows the geographical features of Florida. One of the most interesting features on the map is "the Great Sandy Ridge" that is shown running the length of he center part of the state. It looks almost as if the Florida peninsula has a mountain range. Of course, Florida does have a high point in the center of the state, but it is more like a slight bulge and some gently rolling hills. The high points in the center of the state are not much higher than 100 feet above sea level. The highest point in the states is in the Panhandle and is less than 400 feet above sea level.

"A new map of part of the United States of North America containing the Carolinas and Georgia. Also the Floridas and part of the Bahama Islands from the latest authorities." This map was originally created in 1866. Map Credit: Courtesy of the Special Collections Department, University of South Florida. Digitization provided by the U.S.F.
