Fort Gatlin Hotel

Architects: F. H. Trimble  Constructed by F. A. Peppercorn  Cost: $600,000

Style: Spanish Colonial Style - included an arcade, tile roofing and a central parapet over the entrance.

Businesses: Fort Gatlin Hotel, North Orlando State Bank (opened in 1926), Emerich's Cafeteria, WDBO Radio (beginning in 1927), The American Automobile Association (opened in January 1930), and the studios of WHOO Radio.

Current use of site and owner: The Orlando Sentinel

Notes: The Hotel was named after the original Fort Gatlin, a Seminole Indian War Fort located on Lake Gatlin in the 1830s (for more information on Ft. Gatlin, go here)The building was bought and subsequently demolished by the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper which chose to expand its operations on the site.

First Church of Christ, Scientist

Original Owner: First Church of Christ, Scientist

Architect: George Foote Dunham

Style: Italian Renaissance – Classical Revival - 2 and a half stories, masonry, copper dome, and the main facade has a Doric portico.

Churches: (1928-1975) First Church of Christ, Scientist, (1975-present) St. George Greek Orthodox Church

The Church sits across the street from Lake Eola.

Original Owner: Orange County Schools

Style: Neo-Classical Revival

Businesses: (1926-1952) Orlando High School, (1952-present) Howard Middle School.

Notes: The school was extensively renovated in 2001-2002.

Southern Bell Building

45 North Magnolia Avenue

Constructed: 1925 - 1926

Original Owner: Southern Bell (AT&T)

Style: 20th Century Style

Businesses: AT&T and it's "Baby" Bell, Southern Bell. Today, Bell South. Currently it is operated by AT&T.

Notes: In 1916, Southern Bell purchased the Orlando Telephone Company. The original building is on the right in the image opposite. In 1947, three more stories were added. In the 1970s, the secondary part of the building on the left was completed. It continues to be an office building and currently houses computer and switching equipment.
