The land on which Greenwood Cemetery sits was originally purchased in 1880 by L. P. Wescott, Cassius Boone, James Duke, J. H. Livingston, Nat Poyntz, W.R. Anno, James Delaney and Sam Robinson to be used as a cemetery.

In 1892, the city of Orlando purchased the site which had been named Greenwood Cemetery from its private owners for $3000. The funds were raised from a bond issue. At the same time, the city bought an additional 14 acres adjacent to the cemetery. This made a total of 60 acres. At the time, most graves were moved from downtown graveyards and other family plots to Greenwood.

Many of Orlando's first citizens are at rest in Greenwood Cemetery. These pages chronicle their lives and show their final resting places. Follow the links below to proceed into Greenwood Discovery.

If you would like to visit Greenwood Cemetery personally, it is easy to find. From Colonial Drive (U.S. Hwy 50), head south on Mills Avenue. After a couple miles you will pass under the East West Expressway (S.R. 408). Continue south for three streets. That will be Greenwood Street. Turn left and follow the street until it leads you directly into the entrance of Greenwood Cemetery.
