THE POWELL CEMETERY

The old graveyard in South Orlando is known as the Powell Cemetery because it was located on the land of Orlando pioneer, Isaac Powell. The graveyard is located on South Orange Avenue across the street from Lake Jennie Jewel, just north of the City of Edgewood and Gatlin Avenue.

The oldest tombstone in this cemetery is dated 1877 but many of the markers are not readable. It is very likely that the graveyard could be dated to the Civil War era (1861-1865). No burials have been made here since 1945 and the site is pretty full. Some of the people buried here fell victims to the Influenza Epidemic of 1918-1919, but that is pretty common with all cemeteries from that era.

After checking the Orange County Property Appraiser's records, it appears that the graveyard is owned by Orange County. As a cemetery, it is exempt from taxes and the basic ownership information is unclear, but it is likely to be owned by Orange County.  The land is described as being 11,366 sq. feet, or little over a 1/4 of an acre. It's value is listed as $45,464 as of 2003.
