Greenwood has four official areas dedicated to veteran interments. All four are fairly small and by no means contain the graves of every veteran buried in Greenwood. The four sites are: 1) Confederate veterans of the Civil War (1861-1865), 2) Union veterans of the Civil War (1861-1865), 3) Veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898), and 4) Veterans of World War I (1917-1918) and World War II (1941-1945). Each section (with the exception of the WWII interments) was developed after the respective war war over. They were designed to be honorable locations for veterans who died after their service was completed. Different organizations such as the American Legion and the Daughters of the Confederacy also helped to defray the cost of burial for those veterans who had fallen on hard times at the end of their lives. To see where in Greenwood each of the sites is located, go to the map page (see navigation bar on left).
Greenwood does not have official areas for veterans of Korea, Vietnam or the Gulf War. Veterans of those conflicts are interred with non-veterans throughout the cemetery. |
